Much better than the kit lens, and comparable in optical sharpness to the famous 24-105 L, this lens is a good choice. It has the latest IS for stable shooting as well. All in all, a good lens. But, because it is only a few hundred less than the L alternative, for those working in wet or dusty conditions, the upgrade to the heavy duty alternative is a no-brainer. But for the average amateur or pro-sumer, this isn't bad.
