The Ford Edge is a compelling crossover SUV.
One of the most interesting of Ford's crossover platforms is the Edge SUV. The Edge combines a sporty and aggressive look with power galore delivered in the form of 265 HP from a 3.5 litre V6. This engine uses variable cam timing to also deliver a solid 250 lb.-ft of torque.
The power is put to the pavement via a 6-speed automatic transmission and standard front wheel drive. All wheel drive is an available option and really makes the Edge an all-weather vehicle. In standard front wheel drive configuration, the Edge is rated at 17 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway - not stellar, but not bad either. Fuel efficiency decreases a bit for the all-wheel-drive model, but not appreciably so.
Like other manufacturers, Ford provides the Edge with an adaptable AWD system. According to Ford, the Edge AWD system "predicts traction and automatically delivers the precise and proper amount of engine torque to all of the wheels even before slippage occurs." Coupled with competent handling from a fully independent front and rear suspension, this makes the Edge a safe bet when the weather turns bad. It also gives the Edge an entertaining, and fun to drive, attitude.
The Edge comes in four trim levels. The SE model starts at $26,635. Moving up from there are the EDGE SEL, EDGE Limited, and EDGE Sport. The latter, the most expensive of the group, comes in at a hefty $34,755. For that it also comes with some of the cars top options, including standard SYNC voice activated communication and entertainment system.
